4-Ingredient Hamburger Casserole

Hamburger casserole with tomato soup and cheese

If you’re looking for a 4-ingredient hamburger casserole, this is browned ground beef, cooked pasta shells, two cans of tomato soup, ½ cup water, cheddar, and mozzarella. 375°F, covered 20 minutes, uncovered 10 so the cheese browns. It’s not lasagna, not baked ravioli, and not a from-scratch meat sauce. Don’t skip cooking the pasta first — dry shells in tomato soup don’t magically become al dente in 30 minutes the way slow-cooker lasagna noodles do in a wetter pot.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe ❤️

  • Four ingredients if you count the two cheeses as one “cheese.”
  • Tomato soup is the sauce. No extra jars unless you want them.
  • Kid pan. It’s mild.
  • About 45 minutes including boiling pasta.
  • Leftovers reheat if you don’t dry them out.

Ingredients 🛒

  • 1 pound (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 pound pasta shells (medium), cooked just shy of package time
  • 2 (10.75-ounce) cans condensed tomato soup
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar, divided
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella, divided
  • ½ cup water
  • Garlic powder, salt, and pepper for the beef

Condensed tomato soup is the ingredient. Tomato sauce or marinara is a different casserole (thinner, more acidic). Don’t “open a jar of pasta sauce” and still call it the soup version unless you like that better — it’s not the same salt and thickness.

Cook the shells first. This is not the slow-cooker lasagna method with dry noodles. Soup doesn’t give you enough liquid for a pound of dry pasta in 30 minutes.

1 pound pasta + 1 pound beef is a full 9×13. Cheese is 2 cups cheddar plus 1 cup mozzarella — 3 cups total, half stirred in, half on top. Don’t dump two pounds of dry pasta in.

If you wanted baked ravioli, that’s frozen ravioli and jarred sauce — different post. If you wanted slow-cooker lasagna, that’s uncooked lasagna sheets. Don’t mix the three in your head.

Equipment

A pot for pasta. A skillet. A 9×13, greased. Foil. 375°F.

How to Make It 👩‍🍳

Heat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×13. Boil shells according to the package, drain. Don’t rinse unless they’re a glued brick — starch helps the soup cling.

Brown beef with garlic powder, salt, and pepper; drain fat. Stir in both cans of soup, the ½ cup water, cooked pasta, and half of the cheddar and mozzarella. Cook 2–3 minutes on medium so the soup loosens.

Into the 9×13. Rest of the cheese on top. Foil. Bake 20 minutes. Uncover, 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and the edges bubble. Broil 2–3 minutes only if you want the top browned — watch it. If you bake uncovered the whole time, the top leatherizes and the corners dry.

Why the Technique Works

Condensed soup + a little water is a shortcut béchamel-tomato hybrid. It’s salty. Taste before you add more salt to the beef.

Covered then uncovered is melt then brown. That’s the 20 + 10 split. 45 minutes uncovered is crunchy pasta edges.

Pasta shy of done because the oven keeps cooking it. Mushy shells are pasta that was fully boiled then baked.

Cheese in the mix and on top: inside for pull, top for the brown layer. All on top is a cap that slides off.

Cooking Tips

Drain the beef. Grease on tomato soup is an orange slick.

Medium shells hold the sauce. Tiny soup shells get lost. Large shells are fine. Spaghetti works but it’s a different twirl.

Variations and Substitutions

Ground turkey: drier. A little extra water.

Cream of tomato or extra cheddar: still a casserole. A can of diced tomatoes adds chunks and water — drain them.

Frozen mixed veg: stir in thawed, dry. That’s a fifth ingredient and extra moisture.

No condensed soup: then you’re making a different baked pasta. Use marinara and expect a different salt level.

Serving Suggestions

Green salad. That’s enough.

Storage, Freezing & Reheating

Fridge 4 days. Reheat 325°F covered with a spoon of water so the pasta doesn’t turn to chalk.

Freeze up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge. Pasta will be softer. Don’t freeze, thaw, refreeze.

Assemble ahead, fridge, bake from cold adding 10 minutes. Still the foil then uncover.

Troubleshooting

Dry: no water, overbaked uncovered, or pasta drank everything. Splash of water, foil, don’t go 45 minutes naked.

Soupy: didn’t drain pasta or beef, or extra water. Bake uncovered a few more minutes.

Mushy pasta: boiled fully, then baked. Stop the boil earlier.

Bland: no salt on the beef, mild cheese. Soup is already salty — don’t confuse bland with “I wanted garlic.” Add garlic powder to the beef next time.

Greasy: 80/20 not drained.

FAQ

Do I cook the pasta?

Yes. This isn’t dry-noodle slow-cooker lasagna.

What size cans?

The small condensed cans (~10.75 oz), two of them. Not two 26-ounce family cans unless you like soup.

Cheddar only?

Fine. Mozzarella only is milder and stretchier.

Is this lasagna?

No. Different noodles, different method, different URL.

Gluten-free?

GF shells plus a GF tomato soup if you can find one. Condensed soup often has wheat. Check labels. Still cook the pasta first.

Nutrition, Allergens & Dietary Notes

  • Protein: 32–38 g
  • Carbs: 55–65 g
  • Fat: 20–28 g

Contains: wheat, dairy, beef. Tomato soup is high sodium and often has wheat. Not gluten-free as written. Not baked ravioli. Not a from-scratch Sunday ragù.

Final Thoughts

Boil shells short, brown beef, two cans of soup, cheese, 375°F foil then uncovered. If you put dry pasta in the pan, you’re making a different, riskier bake.
